Try It

During the Try It part of the instructional framework, students make sense of the problem with their classmates. Then, they try the problem on their own using strategies that draw from their prior knowledge of mathematical concepts.

Make Sense of the Problem

The teacher introduces a real-world problem and uses a language routine, like Three Reads, to help students make sense of the problem. Students make sense of the quantities and the relationships between them.

Solve and Support Your Thinking

Students are given time to think about how to approach the problem, using whatever strategies or tools they choose.

Discuss It

During the Discuss It part of the instructional framework, students share their strategies with a partner using sentence starters to launch the conversation. Then, they engage in a whole class conversation about selected class strategies and representations presented in their Student Worktext.

Share Your Thinking with a Partner

Students turn and talk to a partner about their strategies. The teacher monitors the discussions and asks questions to help make students’ thinking clear and visible. Talking to a partner helps all students, especially English Learners, become more comfortable sharing their ideas with the class.

Compare Strategies

After talking to a partner, teachers select students to share their thinking with the class and support students in making connections between student strategies and those in the book.

Connect It

During the Connect It part of the instructional framework, students answer questions about the strategies and representations they’ve examined. Then, they apply what they’ve learned to new problems.

Make Connections and Reflect on What You Have Learned

Students answer the Connect It questions independently or sometimes in pairs to deepen understanding and make further connections. Teachers facilitate a student discussion comparing responses to the most essential questions. Students then answer a Reflect question to summarize their learning.

Apply Your Thinking to New Problems

Students apply what they have learned to new problems in the Apply It and Additional Practice portions of each lesson session. Teachers encourage students to solve the problems in more than one way to build flexibility in their thinking.
