Strong standards-based approach: Ready Florida B.E.S.T. Mathematics is fully aligned to Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for Mathematics. The lessons address the instructional sequence of the benchmarks as well as the length of time to teach each standard.

Lesson Progressions at the beginning of every unit in the Teacher Resource Book allow teachers to see at a glance how the lesson connects to previous and future learning.

Incorporates Mathematical Thinking and Reasoning (MTR) Standards

MTR Standards support ways in which students engage with mathematics, promoting a deeper understanding of the concepts.

The MTR Standards are fully integrated throughout the lessons in the Ready Florida B.E.S.T. Mathematics Student Instruction Book. The Think–Share–Compare instructional routine is the recommended framework for teaching Ready Florida B.E.S.T. Mathematics lessons. With this routine, teachers can easily and confidently engage students in discourse and the MTR Standards while using standards-aligned teaching practices.

The Teacher Resource Book includes MTR Standards Tips that provide more in-depth information for select MTR Standards addressed in the lessons.

Delivering the Demands of Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for Mathematics

Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for Mathematics demand instruction that balances conceptual understanding, procedural skills and fluency, and application. Ready Florida B.E.S.T. Mathematics achieves this balance with lessons that develop understanding and a grade-appropriate level of fluency in tandem so students can easily apply what they have learned to new situations.

Understand Lessons focus on developing conceptual understanding at critical points in instruction.

Skills and Strategy Lessons focus on helping students make connections to acquire and apply efficient procedures through multiple representations.

Math in Action Lessons (Grades 2–5) feature open-ended problems with many points of entry and more than one possible solution.

1. B.E.S.T. Focus sets expectations for what students should understand and be able to do, according to the benchmarks.

2. Lesson Objectives
Content Objectives identify the mathematical goals for the lesson, while Language Objectives identify how students demonstrate their understanding of those goals.

3. Prerequisite Skills can be used to monitor students’ understanding at different levels and to scaffold instruction for small group discussions.

4. Learning Progressions set a context for the lesson based on how the lesson builds on prior knowledge and how it prepares students for future learning.

5. Multiday lessons allow students time to develop skills and a deeper understanding of concepts.
